Rights and Permissions Guidelines (Word)
If you’ve ever wondered “is it ok for me to print this poem?” or “does copyright law prevent me from using this excerpt?” while working on a project, then these guidelines might be helpful to you.
This document (available in PDF and Word file) breaks down some fundamental principles about copyright and related concepts (such as fair use and the public domain) and walks you through how to obtain necessary permissions for projects in the book arts. It is intended to be used by students, instructors, and independent artists in a variety of disciplines.
A huge thank you to Sarah Maker at Edition Studios out in Seattle for first publishing this guide on the studio’s book arts blog, Inklings.
One of my favorite things about making work in the book, paper, and print spheres is the wealth of deeply talented, highly knowledgeable folks who’ve committed to these communities by running businesses that offer specialized tools and quality materials. This list is by no means comprehensive (for that, look no further than the Book Arts Web run by Peter D. Verheyen), but does feature vendors I rely on from project to project, as well as some places that are just outside the scope of straightforward book arts supplies. Bonus: each of the people listed on this page is a gem to do business with.
